Giant sequoia, named 'big tree' by John Muir (Sequoiadendron giganteum)
Common names include giant redwood, Sierra redwood, Sierran redwood, Wellingtonia. John Muir called it simply ‘big tree’. Sequoiadendron giganteum are the most massive trees on Earth and occurs naturally only in groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.
Featured in a 2017 solo show at University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, California. The exhibition of 64 works featured portraits of specimens collected by the artist on-site over the previous three years.
